This Commercial Sums it Up Pretty Nicely – Proud To Be

Unless you’ve been living under an old Windows 95 PC you’ve likely seen the debate online:

Change the Mascot

It’s an effort of nations, individuals and organizations to update the attitude directed toward Indigenous people as somehow being spiritual and economic property fit for exploitation.

Most famous in this effort is the controversy surrounding the NFL team “Washington Redskins” name and mascot. If you are perplexed as to why this should be an issue, consider the blowback if a team was named the “Blackskins” or the Yellowskins” and featured an African or Asian mascot.

Of course, it simply wouldn’t stand.

And yet, for some reason, Indigenous people are still considered to be less than human. A strong statement, but it fits when you consider the ongoing struggle for recognition and basic respect undertaken by Native Americans, Inuit, First Nations and Metis. This video is just one of many efforts at the reaching out, educating and sharing necessary for a fundamental shift in colonial relations.

    I remember getting an uneasy feeling when the vancouver canucks unveiled their new jersey and logo. To me it looked like identity theft.
