We Are Not Your Property

I made this thinking about Indigenous women and the burden they bear in being seen less as women and more as objects.

I realized that it spoke to so many things, even beyond the indigenous experience.

I realized that it spoke to every one of us as we try to navigate our way between being commodities or customers in this commerce machine where seemingly everything has a price, and the deep and real yearning to find balance.

The desire to be SEEN and appreciated – valued, loved.

All these problems and issues we face in this modern world come down to that. Can we see each other?
We are bombarded with messages of fear, of not being enough, of not having enough.

But we are enough.

And maybe, just maybe, we’ve had enough.

I am really excited to share this cool Kickstarter campaign with you! My friend Rick Harp and the great Wabisheg Rice are trying to raise enough money to record an audiobook.

A lot of people ask me how they can help create a better society where Indigenous people belong. Well, it’s small steps like this that do it!

Help build a mutual, cultural platform where everyone shares and everyone benefits from the sharing.

Sacred Teachings

feel free to share…

How well do you know your own world?

Do you walk? Do you sense? Do you watch the small life? Do your feet ever touch the ground, skin to soil?

We are the children of this earth and we forget that basic truth due to lives dictated by concrete and steel, glass and screens.

Our lives, our knowledge of our hearts, the lessons of the hoop, are forgotten in the grid, the segmentation, the great separation of connection our societies have drifted toward.

Even our beliefs, our understanding of how to live a good life become weighed down in needless complexity, rules, and judgements.

But really, it’s all so simple.

Understand that life springs from Mother Earth and all mothers.

Our cycle hasn’t got 12 months, but 13 moons.

Walk the Good Red Road

Allow ceremony to ground you, to cleanse you, remind you to be present, to connect your spirit, body, mind and feeling.

Honour those who came before for their sacrifice and prayers, their effort to preserve these teachings. They dance in the Aurora, watching us, loving us, reminding us of seven generations passed, seven generations to come. They remind us that we are a moment in the journey.

All barriers are in the end simply illusions. All fences mere guide posts to help us remember that.

Open your wings and soar.

Ooen your lungs and breathe.

Open your heart and feel the pulse of all life.

Open your eyes and see.

Open your arms and embrace the moment, no matter what it is. Pain, joy, excitement, wonder…there is a teaching.

Educate yourself. Share your knowledge with others.

Be humble, humble, humble.

What you know, others have known, what you don’t know, others have seen. You are part of the whole.

Your voice is unique, as is every voice. Sing together. Dance together. Mourn together. Laugh together.

Don’t fear the passing of time. Instead anticipate the gifts the new seasons bring.

Be kind.

Surprise Story – Indigenous Canadian Author’s Small Press Book Challenges Big Names & Publishers

Okay … what??

Four months since release, Lightfinder is STILL up there with these greats?? Martin, Rowling, Gaiman, Gabaldon …

I’m humbled beyond belief.

Thank you.

Seriously. I am so amazed that a book written by an Indigenous author, published by a small press, with literally zero dollars or cents for a budget has been able to break through the noise and marketing and “money for positioning” on bookshelves to remain in the top 100 for so long.

It’s hard to understand. Harder to believe.

What does it say?

All I know is, everyone who has picked up a copy so far, thank you.

Anyone who hasn’t yet but is going to…thank you, too.

As part of that thanks, remember that I’m giving away 3 free art prints (I should still do that, right?) with proof of purchase.

They’re super hi-res downloads and worth about $1200 or so.

Plus you’ll get entered into the small original painting draw at Christmastime.

Anyway, thanks a zillion trillion. You’re amazing.

And if you feel like getting a class set and donating it to a school or community, you are beyond amazing. You’re a hero.

If you’re a school getting it for the kids, you’ll be happy you did. It’s really readable.

You’re going love this book.

It’s like nothing you’ve ever read before.

What starts out quietly, ends in a place you wouldn’t believe.

And it’s only the start.

What if you could see the living world in a way you never expected?
What if you could see the part you play?
What if there were dangers deeper than you ever feared?

What if there was a better way?

Aisling, a young Cree woman, is faced with all these questions and more in a moving story of adventure, danger, love and loss. Will she find her brother in time, or will it all be too late?

The journey begins.

And it ends in war.

People are Raving about Lightfinder:

“As a fan of Aaron Paquette’s dazzling artwork, I am in awe of the vision and craft behind The Lightfinder Saga. If you loved Stephen King’s The Stand and the worlds that Neil Gaiman can create, you will love these characters who are fighting for humanity’s survival. Bravo!”

–Richard Van Camp
author of The Lesser Blessed, Angel Wing Splash Pattern and Godless but Loyal to Heaven

“With an artist’s eye and a storyteller’s soaring imagination, Aaron Paquette has written a page-turner. I found myself rooting hard for Aisling, Eric and their beloved Kokum. This book is a hugely engaging cautionary tale: the stakes are high if we keep giving in to our appetites. But there is great light in Lightfinder. Congratulations, Aaron, on this strong debut.”

The Calling ——- #agreaterpurpose #artshow #yeg

You are the reason for everything.

For you, the universe has come into being.

You are the result of every joy and every sorrow.

You are here because you are amazing.

This is true.

It’s true for you.

And for every person who ever existed.

It’s true for every animal, plant, stone and fire.

It’s true for the quick and the dead.

The purpose?

None if you have none.

All if you know you are All.

You are here to serve. To give.

Just as you have been given life, given breath, given happiness and pain.

You, too, must give.

And whatever energy, whatever feeling, whatever vibration you give, you speak, think, feel and act on…

That is what you will receive in return.

There will be those who take and take and take.

They are unhappy. Their heart is filled with the emptiness of their fear and hunger.

They are hurting.

They hurt back.

But don’t pour your life into that chasm, that pit of death.

Pour your life into Life. Into light. Into growth and healing.

Learn and share.

Forgive, love, and care.

That is the calling.
